From natural wonders to the sun painting the sky every morning, the planet is packed with precious gifts. Yet, we don’t always treat our home with the gratitude it deserves.
That’s why Earth Day is so important. Every year on the 22nd of April, people globally celebrate the planet and draw attention to the ways we can treat it better.
Here at Tisserand, we are bettering ourselves every day, learning how we can work harmoniously for people and the planet. For Earth Day 2022, we want to share some simple sustainable swaps so you can join us in celebrating.
What is earth day and why is it celebrated?
Earth Day is an annual global event, that honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness about climate change.
The very first Earth Day was celebrated in the United States on the 22nd of April 1970. By 1990, Earth Day had become a global event, encouraging 200 million people around the world to live more sustainably. Earth Day is now celebrated by 1 billion people in 192 countries!
But why is it celebrated? does it actually have an impact?
Well, if the very first Earth Day is anything to go by, then yes! The original Earth Day led to some of America’s most important environmental laws, including The Clean Air Act and The Clean Water Act (and more).
Now, it’s a crucial yearly reminder for everyone – from big global corporations to individual consumers – to keep the health of the planet at the heart of everything they do.
Earth Day 2022
Every year Earth Day has a different theme, and Earth Day 2022 is ‘Invest in Our Planet’.
Though this is largely about the regulations, incentives, and public/private partnerships, governments make to build the green economy, individuals also have the power to make a difference.
You may have heard the saying ‘vote with your dollar’, which essentially means where you spend your money puts out a message of the world you want to see. Since studies show that 85% of people are trying to be more eco-friendly in their purchasing, it seems people are voting for a greener world!
Now, you’re probably wondering where to begin…
5 Sustainable Swaps
1. SWAP driving for walking
Walking instead of driving is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint (and petrol cost!). Not only that, but it will also help you get your recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day.
2. SWAP synthetic man-made cleaning products for DIY cleaning products
Did you know that thousands of nasty chemicals from cleaning products are washed into the oceans every year? Luckily, it’s easy to make your effective products using our Spring Clean Essential Oils.
3. SWAP high-street for pre-loved clothes
Fashion keeps getting faster, with new lines dropping at a speed it’s impossible to keep up with. Try taking a slow and more mindful approach to your clothes. You could spend a day browsing thrift stores, online marketplaces, or swapping old items with friends and family.
4. SWAP meaty meals for veggie alternatives
You were probably told as a child to eat their greens. As well as good your health, eating plant-based more often is ‘the single biggest way to reduce your impact on earth’.
5. SWAP single-use plastic for reused and recycled materials
By now you’re probably well aware that plastic pollution is a BIG problem. Using a reusable water bottle, taking a tote bag to the shops, and buying loose fruit and veg are some ways to cut down on your plastic waste.
And we’re right here with you on this swap, as we’re working to reduce the plastic in our packaging. You can read the steps we’re taking in our sustainability journey here.
