Our new Nature’s Spa Bath and Body Collection was inspired by nature and its slow-paced gentle movement with nature’s wellbeing in mind, crafted by nature with our 100% natural fragrance and is conscious of nature with our sustainable packaging. Let’s break down the steps we have taken, and the steps we still have to take.
We use FSC cardboard.
At Tisserand Aromatherapy, we try to avoid excess packaging wherever we can, and so the only product in our Nature’s Spa collection to have an outer carton is the product that is naked inside! (Its only natural!) Our fragrant Hand and Body Soaps are housed in paper board which is 100% FSC certified. Nature’s wellbeing in mind.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) works to take care of our forests and those who rely on them: by protecting plant and animal species, indigenous people’s rights, forest workers’ safety, and much more. This is achieved through FSC certification, ensuring forests around the world are responsibly managed. Currently, over 90 million hectares of forest are FSC certified, in over 80 countries worldwide.
We use eco inks, coatings and glues.
The inks used on our Soap cartons are derived from renewable resources such as corn and linseed and are mineral oil free. Our aqueous (water-based) coatings and glues are soluble, non-hazardous and easily recycled. The alternatives (UV inks and oil and chemical-based coatings) use large amounts of energy in the printing process and makes board difficult to recycle. A carton printed with vegetable-based inks and water-based coatings is compostable and can take as little as 2-6 weeks to completely biodegrade, leaving zero hazardous waste. Has our gold foil caught your eye? Great news – this doesn’t affect the recyclability of the cartons.
Our plastic bottles are made from 50% recycled plastic.
While plastic is a problem, PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic could be an answer – using the plastic that is already on the planet! Aside from the obvious issues related to making new or ‘virgin’ plastic in a world already drowning in it, the carbon footprint of manufacturing 100% PCR Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is 60% lower than virgin PET (which includes all the energy to collect, recycle, and remanufacture the plastic).
Our fragrances are 100% natural.
Using 100% natural fragrances means it is even more important to ensure that all our ingredients are sourced according to our strict standards for quality and integrity. We categorise our oils as Organic, Ethically Harvested or Wild Crafted. Our Nature’s Spa Bath and Body Collection features a combination of these sources to ensure the best quality fragrance and aromatherapeutic benefit, while protecting our planet.
Vote with your pound.
By purchasing products using PCR plastic, you are supporting companies who are reusing the plastic that already exists in the world. Some simple things to look out for when you’re shopping unavoidable plastic:
– Shop products using PCR plastic over virgin plastic
– Avoid single use plastic wherever possible and buy re-usable containers instead – consider usage vs lifespan of the plastic (a disposable coffee cup lasts 11 minutes on average, but the non-recyclable plastic lid could last forever in some form…)
Is plastic avoidable?
Plastic was invented to protect the integrity of the product – it’s a bit of a wonder material. Plastic can be cleaned easily (making it safer and sterile) it’s light to transport (reducing fuel consumption) and cheap to manufacture. Its durability is both a blessing and a curse. We will continue to do what we can to reduce our plastic use and source our unavoidable plastics as responsibly as possible, while continuing to bring you the products you know and love.
Small steps:
While we have learnt a lot along the way, we aren’t perfect and won’t change the world overnight. What we can promise is that we will remain honest throughout the journey and our team will continue to learn and do better, sharing our learning with you as we go!
