SARAH ECKERSLEY, YOGA INSTRUCTOR
You can’t pour from an empty cup and that is why self-care is SO important. By taking the time to invest in yourself you’re in a much better position to enjoy all the other aspects of your life and be there for all those that you love and care about.
To ensure I keep myself topped-up I have a few rituals, some which are part of my day-to-day life and others I indulge in every now and again – because it’s totally fine to treat yourself every once in a while!
Every morning I take the time to write in my gratitude journal. I invest in a beautiful notebook and pen and have them sat by my bed meaning when I wake up, I have no excuse to take the time to write down all the things I’m grateful for. It’s a lovely way to start the day and provides a beautiful snapshot of my life and all the amazing things in it.
For when I’m on the go – which is most of the time – I always carry aromatherapy oils in my bag to help soothe my mood or boost my energy. As I often split my time between classes and meetings, I find Tisserand Aromatherapy Total De-Stress Pulse Point Roller Ball is a great go-to. It helps calm my mind and keep me grounded when I’m running around town.
If I’m feeling more indulgent or just super run down and in need of some rest and relaxation I like to go for a massage. Depending on how my body feels I pick a massage that is going to leave me feeling my best, preferably using aromatherapy oils.
One of my favourite things is to bed down at home. I’ll put on my favourite pyjamas, snuggle down in a blanket, light a Tisserand Aromatherapy candle or spray its Total De-Stress Moodfix Mist around the room to add to the ambience and watch my favourite trashy TV show. It costs nothing, feels slightly naughty and weirdly indulgent.
Lastly, one of my all-time favourite things to do when I’m in need of some self-care is to escape to the country. Living in London I miss green spaces like crazy so escaping into the great outdoors with my husband, a picnic and nothing but rolling hills, wooded walks and fresh air is absolute bliss! I find it not only grounds me but helps to boost my perspective and overall mood in a way nothing else can.
JO KELLETT, AROMATHERAPIST & ESSENTIAL OIL EXPERT
Looking after myself to be the best for my family, my clients and my self is a daily reward, not a chore.
I love to start my day with hot water and lemon to ease my digestive system awake before having my breakfast. I’m fortunate enough to have a garden, so I sit and contemplate the changing picture outside my window.
If it’s not a client day i.e. I am doing admin, I will always use an essential oil blend in my Aroma Spa Diffuser to keep me alert and focused. As I mostly work from home I can get easily distracted. If I need to concentrate on the task in hand, I will mostly use stimulating essential oils in my blend. Maybe Cardamom, Ellettaria cardamomum, May Chang, Litsea cubeba and Atlas Cedarwood, Cedrus atlanticus. This will give me focus with a hint of calmness from the Cedarwood and a zingy lift from the May Chang, the Cardamom will give me mental clarity.
After a full day of work, and being a Mum, I need a good night’s sleep. An effective way to encourage a good night’s sleep is to use essential oils. I really like the Tisserand Aromatherapy Sleep Better range, the pillow spray is my favourite. Or I may apply the Sleep Better Massage & Body Oil into my chest and upper body; to envelop me in the aromas whist nourishing my skin. The combination of Lavender, Sandalwood and Jasmine are a delight.
By spending a few moments each day take to look after yourself you can, and will, make a difference to your health and wellbeing.
EMMA OLIFF, NUTRITIONIAL THERAPIST
Eating is one of the core components to self-care because it helps our bodies to exist. As I’m sure you are aware, you can’t live very long without food or water.
Going for long periods of time without food means that your energy levels will not be at their optimum. Include a balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat in your diet to help nourish your cells with what they require to help you perform. Having a balance of these macro-nutrients will help to keep your blood sugar levels stable and will ensure you feel energized throughout the day.
Nourishing your body with food is such an important part of self-care. The dieting culture regularly tells us that food is the enemy and needs to be controlled, but it’s one of the components of our core existence. Through the act of eating you are investing in your life – so make sure you are choosing the right ones!
Food also regulates your mood, therefore, it’s important to make sure that you are eating the right amounts of food, as well as the right types of food. When you are not eating enough food, you may find yourself irritable and getting ‘hangry’. Likewise, if you overeat you may get lethargic. On those occasions, I reach for Tisserand Aromatherapy Energy High Moodfix Mist. It’s packed full of supercharged, energy-laden essential oils including Lime, Grapefruit and Orange – a couple of spritzes and you immediately feel uplifted and recharged.
It’s also not uncommon to reach for a sugar fix when you’re having a low energy day. This is a short-term fix that causes your sugar levels to spike, leading to a potential post sugar crash and you feeling more de-energised. Reach instead for a natural pick-me-up. I burn Energy High diffuser oil. I love the refreshing scent and it really does help to perk me up.
