At Tisserand Aromatherapy, we have a variety of pre-blended solutions within our Wellbeing range suited for your everyday needs. Working on these blends has been a delight, and I am excited to now be introducing Restore Balance. Our newest blend is designed to help harmonise your inner emotions. The blend is naturally mood-balancing and empowering, helping support and ease emotional changes associated with menopause, perimenopause and menstruation.
It is well documented and understood that our hormones are a fine-tuned system that can sometimes fall out of sync. This can be very common during the menstrual cycle from puberty into perimenopause and beyond. The essential oils I chose for Restore Balance are recognised feminine supportive oils. They have properties and characteristics that help to iron out the emotional ups and downs of the menstrual cycle and hormonal changes women experience throughout their lives.
Rose, Rosa damascena
The Rose, as a flower, has long been used as a symbol of love. Rose can be utilised here for self-love, self-worth and self-acceptance. It is understood to be an overall emotional tonic and can therefore help relieve feelings of tension and irritability. This oil has the most intensely sweet yet musky aroma with heady floral tones, like an aromatic, nourishing hug. Rose is considered supportive at any point in a woman’s life and is efficacious as we go through any transition or change. So, relating that to the life stages of puberty through menopause and beyond; you can see why it would play a crucial role in this range!
Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
Steam distilled from the leaves of this shrub, it has an intensely floral note and underlying ‘green’ and ‘minty’ tone. In Aromatherapy, similarly to Rose, it is considered a balancing feminine essential oil. It can help stabilise emotional anxiety, which can be part of some women’s monthly cycle. It can also be utilised as a skin tonic because of its ‘balancing’ properties and has been noted to aid communication and encourage self-love.
Rose and Geranium were part of a research trial that concluded ‘after inhaling certain essential oils oestrogen levels were increased in saliva’
Shinohara K, Doi H, Kumagai C, Sawano E and Tarumi W (2017) ‘Effects of EO exposure on salivary oestrogen concentrations in menopausal women’ Neuro Endocrinology letters 37, 8, 567-572
Clary Sage, Salvia sclarea
Clary sage has a distinctive, bitter-sweet musky aroma with a herbaceous tone that is very tenacious. The oil is steam distilled from the flowers and as part of the Sage family, has an established herbal medicinal link. A great essential oil to reach for when you need to feel calm and uplifted. It has the ability to ground you whilst offering a sense of rising but gentle energy, also an aphrodisiac and euphoric! Relate that to how you may feel at any given time during hormonal ups and downs. You can see why it plays an essential role in this blend!
Clary Sage was used in a trial that concluded ‘after inhalation cortisol levels were significantly decreased, and serotonin was significantly increased’
Lee KB, Cho E and Kang YS (2014)’ changes in 5-hydroxytryptamine and cortisol plasma levels in menopausal women after inhalation of clary sage oil’ Phytotherapy Research 28, 11, 1599-1605
Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanoides and Grapefruit, Citrus paradisi
Vetiver brings a beautiful base note with its smoky and earthy quality. Steam distilled from this tropical grass’s roots, the oil encourages stillness and contemplation and is also an aphrodisiac. It helps us connect to our Sacral and Root Chakras, bringing energy and focus to the centre of creativity. Grapefruit, expressed from the fruit’s peel, is zingy and refreshing in its aroma and encourages joy and positivity.
I hope this Restore Balance blend offers you harmony and equilibrium in your life and you enjoy using the range.
