Being told you or a member of your family have cancer, of any sort, is a life-changing moment. It can be difficult to deal with and natural to experience waves of different emotions and thoughts, from feeling shocked and anxious to angry, guilty, alone and frightened. Everyone reacts in their own different way and it is the start of a very personal journey.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and with this in mind, we turn our thoughts to looking at how essential oils and aromatherapy can help the millions of incredibly brave people affected by the disease.
The first point to make clear is, as much as we would love them to, essential oils cannot cure cancer. Any reports or such claims are unsubstantiated and there is no scientific evidence to prove that aromatherapy can cure or prevent any type of disease. Where it has been known to help is in easing the side effects of cancer treatment and by being able to support your wellbeing.
Coping with the many challenges cancer throws at you can be difficult. As well as the physical demands during and after treatment, there is the emotional strength required to help you through your recovery. Positivity is key, and this is how aromatherapy can provide support by helping ease those feelings of anxiety and stress balance the mind and provide clarity of thought during uncertain times.
AROMATHERAPY SUPPORT KIT
Before using aromatherapy, always get advice from a qualified aromatherapist who has experience treating people with cancer and check with your doctor or consultant.
Whilst essential oils are 100% natural, many doctors advise that essential oils should be avoided during, and for a few weeks before and after, treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
PLANT POWER
Here are some of our most beneficial essential oils to help body and mind.
SLEEP SUPPORT
Lavender, Vetiver & Sandalwood.
Sleeping and allowing your body time to heal is essential during any treatment. Lavender is well-known for it’s wonderfully relaxing and calming effects on the body and mind. Another less known, but equally effective, oil is Vetiver. Its rich and earthy scent is grounding, calming and can help stabilise the mind. Try our award-winning Sleep Better blend expertly combines Lavender, Sandalwood and Jasmine.
UP YOUR ENERGY
Eucalyptus, Rosemary & Citrus essential oils.
Treatment can be both physically and mentally exhausting. Eucalyptus and Rosemary are both very invigorating and can help to clear the respiratory system, whilst citrus oils such as IOrange, Lime and Grapefruit can help combat fatigue. Our punchy Energy High blend combines a stimulating mix of Orange, Lime and Coriander to revive the senses.
BEAT THE BLUES
Bergamot, Nutmeg, Frankincense
Staying positive is essential, not only for your own state of mind but to help your recovery. Bergamot is a wonderfully uplifting oil if you’re feeling a bit low and Frankincense can help de-stress the mind and focus thoughts. Our Happy blend combines Bergamot, Lemon Tea Tree and Nutmeg to help bring cheer and light to dark days.
TIME OUT
Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Lavender
Taking a mental time out to relax and recuperate is easier said than done when you’re in the middle of treatment. Chamomile and Lavender are old favourites for calming the mind and body, whilst Ylang Ylang can help induce feelings of comfort. Our Head Clear blend combines Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint to help release the tension of a tired mind.
LET GO OF ANXIETY
Petitgrain, Geranium, Clary Sage
When you’re feeling wiped out you are more vulnerable to overwhelming thoughts of anxiousness and worry. Petitgrain refreshes and helps boost positivity when your mood is spiraling down, whilst the soft floral aroma of Geranium can help calm tension. Uplifting, yet relaxing Clary Sage can help brighten the spirits during dark moments. Our Total De-Stress blend combines a plethora of essential oils to help ease anxiety including Geranium, Orange, Clary Sage, Coriander and Jasmine.
There are different ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy
Massage – you don’t always have to remove clothing to have massage or aromatherapy. Having your hand, forearm or head and neck massaged can be very relaxing. Add 5 drops of essential oils or combination of oils to 10ml blending oil, such as Jojoba.
Diffusing – add 3 to 6 drops of essential oil, or combination of oils, to our Aroma Spa Diffuser and allow the ultrasonic technology to infuse the room. Alternatively, add to an oil burner to enjoy the relaxing fragrance.
Bathing – add 4 to 6 drops of essential oil, or combination of oils, to 20ml blending oil, such as Sweet Almond, to a warm bath. Swirl and relax.
