So you’ve heard of Tea Tree – the naturally anti-bacterial powerhouse which can help purify the skin and clean the home – and lovely Lemon – familiar, bright and great for boosting both your immune system and your mood! But have you heard of Lemon Tea Tree essential oil? This incredible essential oil is as pure as any other and with properties shared with both Tea Tree and Lemon essential oils, it may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Lemon Tea Tree’s botanical name is Leptospermum petersonii and it belongs to the Myrtaceae family that includes Tea Tree and Eucalyptus. The essential oil is steam distilled from the highly fragrant leaves of the small shrub-like tree that grows in abundance in Western Australia. You only need to touch the leaves to release the aroma. Its properties have long been recognised by the indigenous population of Australia and it shares a lot of its therapeutic actions with classic Tea Tree.
What makes it stand out is the aroma. While Lemon Tea Tree comes from the same family as Tea Tree, as the name suggests, it has less of the classic medicinal aroma that Tea Tree has, making it potentially more palatable for aromatic use with its citrusy notes, reminiscent of Lemon.
The lemon smell comes from the chemical makeup of the oil. Lemon Tea Tree is rich in Aldehydes which give it its distinctive citrusy fragrance. Aldehydes can also be found in Lemongrass, Melissa and Citronella which all have lemony scents but with no lemon fruit. The lemon-like aroma means that all these oils are uplifting, bright and sunny, perfect for mood enhancement and positivity. Something we all need right now!
When it comes to physical properties, like Tea Tree, Lemon Tea Tree is an excellent skin oil with its natural cleansing benefits and proven anti-microbial action. It’s also a great essential oil to also use around the house if you aren’t fond of the classic Tea Tree aroma.
It’s great in blends too, blending well with woods, spices, herbs or the flowers, bringing a zingy uplifting note. For use on the body, as always, you must dilute it into a carrier or blending oil like Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil. For a body massage oil, you can add up to 5 drops of essential oil to 10ml of blending oil. If you want to use it on the face you must only use 1 drop to 5ml of blending oil.
