It’s the first day of the Commonwealth Games 2018 and on the other side of the world, thousands of athletes at the top of their game will be putting months of hard training to the final test.
Over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories have converged on the Gold Coast, Australia, for the extraordinary 11-day multi-sporting event. There have been many magical moments witnessed at the Commonwealth Games over the years, most notably the famous “Miracle Mile” at the 1954 Games when England’s late Roger Bannister created history by breaking the four-minute mile in a race.
Here at Tisserand Aromatherapy HQ we’ll be cheering the loudest for all the gymnasts. We have a special interest in the sport as we sponsor Team GB gymnast, Sophie Scott. Sophie is watching the events unravel from her home in Surrey, as she studies hard for her A-Levels and trains harder whilst making her come back from injury.
We see first-hand just what discipline and strength is required to become an elite sportsman or woman, and we don’t just mean physically. Staying strong mentally and practising mental hygiene is as important as the hours of training. For world-class athletes, even the most rigorous and advanced physical training is no guarantee of success in a competition. Unless you can tap into your full mental potential, no athlete can triumph in the moment that counts the most.
To truly thrive requires mental self-care, whether you’re an athlete or not. In the same way, we nurture our physical muscles, there are ways to stimulate greater mental strength and wellbeing. For athletes, tapping into their full mental potential through breathing, meditation and relaxing techniques, such as aromatherapy, offer clear advantages.
“If I want to make it to the top, I have to take my health and wellbeing seriously. Tisserand Aromatherapy has shown me how essential oils and aromatherapy can really help manage my stress and nerves naturally. I now use its blends to help keep me focused, energised and rested when I’m training and before a competition.” Sophie Scott, Team GB Gymnast
It may surprise you to hear that something as simple as a plant, tree or flower can help an athlete get more from their performance, but it’s true. From keeping the mind calm or giving a needed energy boost to helping soothe tired, aching muscles, essential oils can be a great addition to a training routine. Here are Sophie’s favourite Tisserand Aromatherapy products for when she’s in training….
