Aromatically, Roman Chamomile is a base note essential oil, the longest lasting scent in a blend. It blends well with Lavender, Mandarin or Frankincense.

Native to Western Europe, the Chamomile plant is cultivated commercially in the UK, France and Hungary. Chamomile is part of the daisy family, Asteraceae, which has thousands of varieties, and grows in abundance across Europe and North Africa. It has a classic white and yellow daisy flower with soft feathery leaves.

In its natural habitat, Chamomile is a ‘companion plant’ that repels many fungi and bacteria – keeping its neighbouring plants safe, and it is often referred to as ‘the plant’s physician’. This is also reflected in its many therapeutic properties and ways that it can be used in Aromatherapy.

Its botanical name comes from the Greek Anthos meaning 'flower' and Nobilis meaning 'noble', which is a direct reference to its wonderful and varied properties. The name 'Chamomile' comes from two Greek words - chamai meaning 'on the ground' and melon meaning 'apple', as this low-growing herb has an apple-like scent.

Roman Chamomile flowers are large in contrast to German Chamomile flowers. Roman Chamomile essential oil has a pale, blue-green colour, as it contains a small amount of Chamazulene (a blue anti-inflammatory constituent).

Roman Chamomile is one of the oldest recorded medicinal herbs, mentioned in ancient Egyptian and Greek texts and used throughout the Middle Ages in Europe, and has been used for centuries to treat a host of ailments. Ancient Egyptians used the calming properties of this plant as a cure for fever and Chamomile has been a staple remedy for British herbalists for generations.
