Lemon is also known for its cleansing and purifying properties. It has natural anti-microbial qualities that can help to support the immune system and assist the body during times of colds and flu. It also has natural astringent properties, which make it great for congested or oily skin, or targeting areas prone to cellulite.

Like all citrus oils, Lemon is a great household cleaner. To freshen kitchen and bathroom surfaces, add 4 drops to 2 tablespoons of baking soda and ½ litre of water while wearing gloves. Lemon can also be used to tackle kitchen bin odours. Simply place 2 drops of essentially oil onto a cotton wool ball and keep it near your kitchen bin. Lemon is also useful for removing crayon marks, pen marks, grease or sticky residue. Just remember to do a patch test in an inconspicuous area before applying the oil to large surfaces.

Aromatically, Lemon is a top note essential oil. It’s the first oil you will smell in a blend. It blends well with Lavender, Ginger or Lemon Tea Tree.

All the citrus family, the Rutaceae, are recognised to have originated in Asia, and Lemon is not believed to have been grown in Europe until Medieval times. Like all citrus species, Lemon trees are evergreen and can produce up to 1,500 fruits each year. Lemons contain sacs in their peel which are filled with essential oil. When the peel is squeezed via a method known as expression, the essential oil is released. In traditional plant medicine, Lemon has a reputation as a ‘cure all’ and it was famously given to sailors to help prevent scurvy.
