The sky is clearing, the temperature rising, and flowers blooming – Spring is here! Many people use this time to clear out their homes and tidy up their gardens ready for the fun times ahead. In this article, we’ll show you how the same logic can be used to spring clean your mind. Let’s get clearing the emotional clutter and plant the seeds for a smoother summer.
5 simple ways to spring clean your mind
As nature comes out of its winter hibernation, let it inspire you to move with the seasons and rekindle your summer energy and joy.
Step 1: Tend to your emotional garden
Spring is the perfect time to get back out in the garden and help bring flowers to life. Whether you’re green-fingered or not, everyone knows that plants can’t thrive where there are weeds in the way. Similarly, you can’t be your best self when there are emotional weeds holding you back. Tend to your emotional garden by identifying negative emotions and consciously removing them, whether that be through talking it out, seeking professional help, journaling, or meditating. As therapist Tom Adams says, ‘‘don’t wait until your garden is overrun before confronting your emotional weeds. You’ll be glad you didn’t, come harvest time’’.
Step 2: Plant the seeds with a visualisation meditation
Now you’ve removed the weeds, it’s time to plant the seeds for a smooth-sailing and successful summer. Start by finding a space where you feel best able to nurture your mind (if it’s warm enough, you might wish to sit outside). Apply Total Destress Roller Ball to your pulse points, take a few deep breaths, and relax into an inner garden visualisation, such as this free one on Insight Timer. Meditate on all the abundance, fun, and excitement you want to invite into your life in the coming season. Plant the seeds, and you can prepare to bloom!
Step 3: Declutter the beliefs that don’t serve you
You’ve tended to your emotional garden, so it’s time to move ‘inside’ and start organizing through your clutter of thoughts. As tidying superstar Marie Kondo says, ‘‘the space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not the person we were in the past’’. The same thing applies to your personal beliefs. Set a 10-minute timer, grab your journal, and jot down all the limiting beliefs that no longer serve you. When the timer goes, look back over the list. This is your mental clutter, and it’s time to clear it out.
For every negative belief, try to find a positive one to take its place. For example, ‘‘I’m bad at my job’’ can become ‘‘I am proud I have achieved X and Y at my job, and I am always learning new things’’. You can always ask a friend if you’re struggling to come up with ideas yourself.
Step 4: Clear space for your ‘energy-givers’
If you’ve become a little slow and sloth-like in winter, why not use this transition season to boost your energy levels? Spritz your space with our Energy Boost MoodFix Mist, put on a mood-boosting playlist, and write a list of the things that drain your energy and the things that lift your energy. Similar to sorting through your wardrobe of kitchen cupboards, keep the energy drainers in a small part of your life and make as much space as possible for the things that bring your joy.
Step 5: Organize your dreams, goals, and ideas
It’s time for the finishing touch: getting organized. If plans, dreams, and goals are swirling around in your mental space with nowhere to go, it’s time to find them a place. A couple of drops of our Happy Vibes blend in your Aroma Spa will create the perfect positive atmosphere to organize your big ideas. Now grab your notepad and write all the things you want to do – projects, tasks, trips, etc. Let yourself get excited as you do it.
Now, put your Marie Kondo hat on and start sorting through them, figuring out how and when you’re able to fit them in. Remember, they’ll be plenty of summers in the future, so don’t feel you have to get everything pencilled in this year!
