Christmas is over, and January is here, a time when many set lots of goals for the new year. Whilst we encourage you to set yourself goals, starting 2023 with a long list of new year’s resolutions might do more harm than good. Here’s how to ditch the pressure and pitfalls of unrealistic goals and discover alternative ways to get the new year wellness boost your need, including our 7 Days of Wellbeing bundle.
What are new year’s resolutions? and are they effective?
First things first, let’s clarify what new year’s resolutions are.
New year’s resolutions are a set of goals that are traditionally set at the beginning of the calendar year, whereby the person picks up a positive habit, or ditches a negative one, and sets the intention to stick to it for at least a year.
Most of the time, they revolve around personal health and wellness. In fact, Statista.com shows that the top choices in 2022 were exercising more, eating more healthily, and (one we can certainly get behind!) spending less time on social media.
But, while the intentions are always good, new years resolutions are notorious for being quickly broken. In 2020, only a quarter of people in the UK who had set resolutions stuck to them.
So, why aren’t they as effective as they seem?
What’s the problem with new year’s resolutions?
Put simply, it’s that you don’t need to change everything about yourself just because the date on the calendar has changed!
You’re fine the way you are, right now. And while there are things you can do to boost your wellbeing, you’re allowed to take your time to discover what those things are and build them into your life at your own pace.
Peg Streep, co-author of their book Quitting: Why We Fear it and Why We Shouldn’t, explains that most of our resolutions aren’t things we actually want to do deep down in our hearts but things we feel we ought to do.
No wonder we’re failing to keep at them – we don’t want to do them in the first place!
3 Alternatives for new year wellness
Instead of setting goals to do something you think will transform you into a better person, try these alternative methods to feel better as the wonderful person you already are.
These aren’t exclusive to January 1st. You can do them on the first of any month, a Monday morning, or even a random Wednesday afternoon when you decide you need a reset.
