Aromatically, Black Pepper is a middle note essential oil, the main body and balance of a blend, meaning its scent will last a few hours. It blends well with May Chang, Geranium or Lemon Tea Tree.

Like other spice essential oils, Black Pepper started life in the Middle to the Far East, travelling to the rest of the world via the spice routes. It is native to both India and Indonesia, and has been used therapeutically in traditional medicine for centuries. In Ayurvedic medicine, it was thought not only to warm the body, but also re-energise the system and restore vitality. It is also mentioned in texts as a remedy to clear congestion from the body and improve circulation. Black Pepper was once considered to be such a valuable commodity that it was used as currency.

Its familiar ‘peppery’ smell comes from a particular aromatic chemical found in the peppercorn, rotundone, which you can also find in Marjoram, Basil and Thyme, and some red wine grapes – hence the ’peppery’ note you often hear about when wine is described.
