Grapefruit can be a helpful mood-booster. It’s often used to ease nervous exhaustion and brighten darker moods, especially during times of hormonal imbalance. There’s a gentle, comforting warmth to it that can bring clarity and rejuvenation to people who are feeling emotionally drained.

Physically

On the skin, Grapefruit has astringent qualities that make it useful for oily or congested complexions. When blended into a massage oil, it may also help to support digestion and encourage detoxification.

Around the home

Grapefruit’s naturally cleansing properties also make it a great addition to homemade cleaning solutions. While weaning gloves, add 4 drops of Grapefruit essential oil to 2 tablespoons of baking soda and ½ litre of water to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

Aromatically, Grapefruit is a top note essential oil. It’s the first oil you will smell in a blend. It blends well with Orange, Frankincense or Tea Tree.

Originally cultivated in the West Indies, Grapefruit are believed to be a cross between a large citrus fruit called a Pomelo (Citrus maximus) and the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), although whether this was by a deliberate hybrid experiment or a natural ‘botanical accident’ remains unclear. The Grapefruit tree has dark glossy leaves and beautiful white flowers that blossom into the bittersweet, yellow fruit. Like all citrus species, Grapefruit contain sacs in their peel which are filled with essential oil. When the peel is squeezed via a method known as expression, the essential oil is released.
