Summer Skin Restoration: Natural Care with Essential Oils

Women smiling with glowing skin, bright sun rays behind her

How lovely it is when the sun comes out and we can finally shed those winter layers, pull out our lighter summer clothes, and spend more time outdoors soaking up the warmth. However, during the summer months, it is vital to take extra care of our skin. Heat, sun exposure, and increased sweating accelerate water loss, which can lead to dryness, irritation, and even premature ageing.

Using essential oils to support your summer skin routine can help reduce moisture loss, soothe irritation, and nourish your skin throughout the hotter months. While they are not a replacement for SPF, they can be powerful, natural boosters for your skincare regimen when used correctly and safely.

3 Best Essential Oils for Summer Skin

If you are wondering which essential oils are best for summer, these three stand out for their cooling and restorative properties:

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)

Patchouli leaf

Patchouli's tenacious, deep aroma feels nourishing and supportive, making it an excellent choice for dry skin. Its therapeutic properties are repairing and restorative, while its natural anti‑inflammatory qualities soothe sore or irritated skin.

  • Reduces inflammation caused by heat and sun exposure.
  • Helps prevent moisture loss, which is essential in hot, dry weather.
  • Supports skin repair and deep nourishment after time in the sun.

Application: Dilute in a blending oil before use on the body or face.

Rose absolute (Rosa damascena)

Rose flowers

Sublime in its aroma, Rose is deeply restorative and nourishing for both body and mind. It hydrates, soothes, and cools the skin, providing extra comfort on hot, sunny days.

  • Hydrates and cools the skin to counter heat-induced moisture loss.
  • Soothes redness and sensitivity, making it ideal for overheated skin.
  • Supports the skin's natural barrier, keeping it soft, supple, and nourished.

Application: Dilute in a blending oil before use on the body or face.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender flowers

Lavender is wonderfully supportive for summer skin due to its naturally calming, cooling, and restorative qualities. It eases heat‑induced redness and supports the skin's recovery.

  • Calms heat‑stressed skin, easing irritation and sensitivity.
  • Supports skin repair following sun exposure.
  • Balances and refreshes the skin, keeping it clear and comfortable.

Application: Dilute in a blending oil before use on the body or face.

How to Create Your Summer Skin Blends

To create an effective summer skincare blend, you need a nourishing, restorative blending oil. I recommend using Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis).

Why choose Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba is uniquely effective because its molecular structure is remarkably similar to our own natural sebum. The skin recognises it as familiar, allowing it to:

  • Absorb easily without clogging pores or feeling heavy.
  • Combine seamlessly with natural oils to support the skin's barrier.
  • Balance oil production and increase resilience.

DIY Summer Skin Recipes

To create a body oil, add up to 10 drops per 20ml of jojoba and for a facial oil, add up to 2 drops per 10ml.

For extra soothing and repairing benefits, you can add Chamomile Roman (Anthemis nobilis) to your blends. It works beautifully alongside Lavender to moisturise sun-kissed skin.

Soothing Body Oil

To 20ml of Jojoba, add:

  • 6 drops of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 4 drops of Chamomile Roman (Anthemis nobilis)

Apply gently to sun-kissed skin.

Soothing Face Oil

To 20ml of Jojoba, add:

  • 2 drops of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 2 drops of Chamomile Roman (Anthemis nobilis)

Apply gently to sun-kissed skin. Also safe for children aged 3+.

With a little extra care and the support of these gentle, restorative essential oils, your skin can stay calm, nourished, and resilient. Use these blends mindfully alongside sun‑safe habits, such as seeking shade, wearing a hat, limiting midday exposure, and drinking plenty of water, to keep your skin hydrated and glowing all summer long.
