The Science of Scent: Scent Association & Conditioning

Our sense of smell is remarkably powerful. Unlike our other senses, smell has a direct pathway from our nose to an area of the brain called the limbic system (our central hub for emotion, memory, and behavioural patterning). It is a quick and dynamic process. All our other senses follow a far more complicated pathway into the brain.

This direct neural wiring means scents are processed extremely quickly and become strongly tied to emotional states and learned behaviours. In short, our sense of smell is fundamental to our emotions and overall wellbeing.

You can read all about the mechanics of smell in our previous post, The Science of Scent: How Your Sense of Smell Shapes Your Wellbeing.

What Is Scent Association and Odour Memory?

Did you know that repeated exposure to a specific scent can build an "odour memory"?

You may have heard about neuroplasticity: the brain's ability to physically adapt and rewire itself. Through repeated exposure, your brain physically adapts to an odour until the scent becomes a reliable cue that triggers a specific emotional or behavioural response.

For example, if you repeatedly use a calming, sedative essential oil during a relaxing routine (such as winding down before bed), your brain forms a conditioned association:

Lavender → Relaxation → Sleep Readiness

This is classical conditioning at a neural level. The scent becomes a learned signal that activates your parasympathetic nervous system (the system responsible for rest, recovery, and digestion). This shift eases physical tension and encourages a deeply relaxed state.

Key Essential Oils for Conditioning Calm

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender is exceptionally well-documented for its ability to promote relaxation. It is rich in two key aromatic compounds:

  • Linalool: Known for its calming and sleep-supportive properties. Linalool helps ease stress and anxiety by gently enhancing the activity of GABA pathways in the brain, promoting a state of calm.
  • Linalyl Acetate: Complements linalool’s effects by promoting deeper, physical relaxation.

Together, these natural constituents guide the brain out of alertness and into a calmer, parasympathetic state. By using Lavender essential oil as part of your regular bedtime routine, you help your body shift into a state that is far more conducive to sleep. With repeated use, your brain learns the cue and knows exactly what to do.

Proven Results: When 82 participants inhaled our Lavender Pure Essential Oil from a tissue every night before bed for 2 weeks, 83% said it had a positive impact on their sleep, with 89% feeling more relaxed before going to bed.

Pre-Blended Sleep Support: The Sleep Better Range

Lavender features prominently throughout our Sleep Better Range. Expertly blended with Jasmine and Sandalwood, it offers a gentle way to unwind and ease into a blissful night’s rest. The collection is available in a variety of options, allowing you to choose the format that best supports your bedtime routine.

Proven Results: In a 2-week user trial with 114 participants using the Sleep Better Blend, 86% reported falling asleep faster. As you inhale these calming aromas each evening, notice how your body begins to soften and your breath naturally slows.

Bergamot Essential Oil (Citrus bergamia)

Another essential oil worth exploring is Bergamot, prized for its uniquely calming yet uplifting nature.

Like Lavender, Bergamot contains high levels of linalyl acetate and linalool (constituents that quiet the sympathetic nervous system, our body’s alert-activation pathway, while supporting the parasympathetic system).

In addition, Bergamot contains limonene, a bright citrus terpene that enhances emotional outlook by influencing dopamine and serotonin activity in the brain. Together, these active constituents allow Bergamot to relax the body while gently lifting your mood.

Pre-Blended Relaxation: The Real Calm Range

Bergamot is a core ingredient in our Real Calm Range. Blended alongside Lavender and Patchouli, it is crafted specifically to help you find quiet and calm in a frantic world. It is available in a range of formats so you can select the product that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Proven Results: In a 2-week trial of 102 participants using the Real Calm Blend, an incredible 97% felt calmer.

How to Work Intentionally with Scent Rituals

As you begin to work more intentionally with scent, you are tapping into one of the most direct pathways into the human brain. Because smell links straight to the limbic system, repeated exposure to supportive aromas can genuinely reshape how your brain responds.

The key is consistency: the more regularly you use an essential oil during moments of rest, the stronger the brain’s association becomes.

Over time, essential oils become familiar neural cues that guide your nervous system towards calm, balance, and emotional ease. This is the true power of olfaction: a simple, sensory ritual that gently trains the brain to relax, settle, and return to a grounded state whenever these aromas are inhaled.
