What is the history of Geranium?
There are over 200 different species of Pelargoniums. Originally from South Africa, they first came to Europe in the 17th century; they now grow abundantly across the globe, some wild some cultivated. Tisserand’s Geranium is grown in Egypt.
Geranium is not mentioned much in herbal history. The first documented distillation of the leaves took place in France around the start of the 18th Century by a French Chemist. It was quickly adopted by the perfume industry as a floral addition to many perfumes. It seems that the first use of the essential oil was by an Italian Dr who used it to treat states of anxiety.
Interesting Fact: The name pelargonium comes from the Greek word pelargos, meaning Stork and refers to the shape of the seed pod, which resembles a Stork or Crane’s bill.
